How fast turnaround actually works in commercial printing
NURO Print·May 21, 2026· 4 min
Print turnaround times are easy to misunderstand. "3-day turnaround" doesn't mean you have the cards in 3 days. Here's what the times actually mean and how to plan.
Production time vs delivery time Every print job has two clocks: 1. Production time — between artwork approval and the job rolling off the press 2. Shipping time — between the press finishing and the box landing at your door
When a printer says "5-day standard", they mean production time. Shipping adds 1-5 more business days depending on origin and destination.
Real timing example: standard 14PT business cards - Day 0 (Monday): you upload artwork, approve proof, pay - Day 1-5 (Tue-Mon): production at 4over facility (5 business days) - Day 6-8 (Tue-Thu): ground shipping from California or Texas to most US addresses - Day 8 (Thursday): cards arrive
Total: 8 business days from order to delivery for "standard 5-day" turnaround.
Turnaround tiers and what they cost - Same-day production (rare): +200-400% on the unit price. Available for some products only. Use only when missed deadline costs more than the upcharge. - Next-day production: +75-150% on unit price. Order before 11am Pacific to qualify. Most common rush option. - 2-day production: +40-75% on unit price. - 3-day production: +20-40% on unit price. - Standard 5-day production: included in base price. - Economy 7-10 day: -10-15% off base price. Available on some products.
Hidden gotchas - Artwork approval clock starts when you approve the proof, NOT when you place the order. If you sit on the proof email for 3 days, your "5-day" turnaround becomes 8 days. - Production timer is in BUSINESS DAYS. Order Friday afternoon, production starts Monday morning. - USPS Priority Mail can shave 2-3 days off cross-country ground but adds $15-40 to shipping.
How to plan backwards You need cards in hand by Friday Nov 7. - Friday Nov 7: delivery target - Wednesday Nov 5: arrives at FedEx local depot (with 2-day shipping) - Monday Nov 3: production complete, ships - Monday Oct 27: order placed + proof approved (5 business days of production)
So you need to place your order at least 11 calendar days before you need it for standard turnaround. Add 3-4 days of buffer if it's important.
