Yard sign sizes: 18x24, 24x36, 4x8 — when to use each
Yard signs are the cheapest physical advertising medium in commercial print. But pick the wrong size and people walking by won't read it. Here is the rule for each scenario.
18x24 (the most-ordered yard sign)
The default real estate, garage sale, political-campaign yard sign. Readable from 30-40 feet away with proper font sizing. 4mm coroplast (corrugated plastic) on H-stakes is the standard build.
**Use when:** Open house signs, "For Sale" / "For Lease" signs, election signs, fundraiser yard signs, garage sales.
**Font sizing rule:** Largest text at 4 inches tall for headline (e.g., "OPEN HOUSE"). Phone number at 3 inches. Don't go smaller than 2 inches on anything you want read from across the street.
24x36 (the next step up)
Better visibility for drive-by traffic and busier streets. Same coroplast build, slightly larger H-stakes. Per-piece price is about 60% higher than 18x24.
**Use when:** Sign at the corner of a busy street, contractor jobsite signs on commercial frontage, large-format event direction signs.
**Font sizing:** Headline 6 inches, supporting text 4 inches.
4x8 panel (the big one)
This is a half-billboard. 4 feet x 8 feet is the size of a sheet of plywood for a reason — it's how large outdoor signs were historically built. Today, 4x8 coroplast or banner-frame mounting is the most common method.
**Use when:** Construction site signs, store-front sale signage, conference and event banners, election year endorsement signage, fundraiser tournament displays.
**Font sizing:** Headline 12-18 inches, supporting text 6-8 inches.
When to upgrade from coroplast to aluminum
Coroplast (4mm or 10mm) is rated for 6-12 months outdoor. After that it fades and brittles. If your sign needs to last 2+ years, upgrade:
- **0.040" aluminum:** 5-7 year outdoor life, retains color well, professional appearance. About 3x the cost of coroplast.
- **0.080" aluminum:** Industrial-grade, used by municipalities. 7-10 year outdoor life. About 5x the cost of coroplast.
When to upgrade to vinyl banner
If the sign is bigger than 4x8 or needs to wrap around something (fence, scaffolding, building corner), vinyl banner with grommets is the answer. 13oz vinyl is the standard for outdoor event banners. 18oz blockout for high-wind locations or double-sided installations.
H-stakes vs step-stakes
H-stakes are the metal wire stakes that the sign slides onto. They are the industry standard for residential yard signs and grass installation. Step-stakes are similar but with foot platforms for easier installation by hand.
For commercial sites or where wind is a factor, upgrade to wooden stakes or sign-frame mounting.
