How many pages can your booklet have? Saddle stitch requires multiples of 4. Perfect bind has different math. This validates your page count and recommends the right binding method.

Page count rules

Saddle stitch: Always a multiple of 4. Each folded sheet produces 4 printed faces (2 sides × 2 fold-sides). Common saddle-stitch counts: 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 40, 48, 64.

Perfect bind: Any multiple of 2. Each sheet is single-fold, glued at the spine. Minimum spine width = ~0.0625" (1/16"), so minimum page count for perfect bind is typically 48 pages on 80lb text. Maximum is 400+ pages with thinner stocks.

The page-count audit: Before submitting your booklet artwork, count: cover front + cover inside front + interior pages + cover inside back + cover back. If saddle stitching, the total must be divisible by 4. If perfect binding, divisible by 2 (and over 48).

Booklet FAQ

Why must saddle-stitched booklets have a page count divisible by 4?

Saddle stitch binding folds sheets in half, so each printed sheet of paper produces 4 pages (front + back of each side of the fold). A booklet with 16 pages uses 4 folded sheets. Page counts that aren't multiples of 4 (e.g. 14 pages) would leave blank fractional pages. Designers either add or remove content to hit a clean multiple.

When do I need to switch from saddle stitch to perfect bind?

Saddle stitch caps out at 48-64 pages depending on paper thickness. Beyond that, the fold gets bulky and pages don't lay flat. Perfect bind (glued spine like a paperback) handles 48-400+ pages and gives you a printable spine. Switchover point is usually 48 pages for thinner stocks, 32 pages for thicker stocks.

Does the cover count in the page count?

Yes. A "32-page booklet" usually means 32 total faces including cover (front, inside front, all interior, inside back, back). So when designing, allocate pages 1+2 for cover, 3-30 for interior content, 31+32 for back cover. Some printers count interior pages only — always verify the convention.

What paper weights work for booklet interior pages?

For saddle stitch interior: 70lb-100lb gloss or matte text. 100lb gloss text is the sweet spot for image-heavy booklets (photo books, real estate portfolios). For perfect bind interior: same range, but lean toward 80lb text for thicker books (avoid making the bound book too heavy).

Should I always use a heavier cover than interior?

Yes, with rare exceptions. Standard cover stocks: 80lb-100lb gloss cover for saddle stitch (gives a distinct heavier feel without overwhelming the binding); 100lb cover or 14PT C2S for perfect bind (the cover needs to support the spine print and survive shelf storage).
